(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 28, 2008) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday 1-0 before a past-capacity crowd of 6,229 at Citibank Park. Long Island’s lead over Southern Maryland in the Liberty Division standings now stands at two-and-a-half games.

Blue Crabs starter Joe Gannon (10-4) recorded his fifth complete game and first shutout of the season. The knuckleballer allowed four hits, eight walks and struck out seven in the victory. Ducks starter Jose Paniagua (3-2) was the hard luck loser as he allowed only one unearned run on four hits and struck out three in six innings of work.

Southern Maryland third baseman Pat Osborn scored the lone run of the game in the fourth inning. Osborn began the frame with a single, moved to third base on an error by Edgardo Alfonzo and later scored on a sacrifice-fly by Eric Crozier. Long Island first baseman Kyle Nichols picked up two of the Ducks four hits on the night.

The Ducks on Friday embark on their longest road trip of the year, a 10-game swing through three cities. The trip opens on Friday night in Newark with a 7:05 p.m. game against the surging Bears. Fans can tune into the game on WNYG 1440 AM, WLIR 107.1 FM, or via streaming webcast at www.liducks.com, with Mike Solano calling the action. The Ducks return home to open their final home stand of the regular season on Monday, September 8. The Ducks will host the Third Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Citibank Park, teaming up with 17 local organizations to help raise funds and awareness of this deadly disease. Game time is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and the Citibank Park gates open at 5:35 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive pink T-shirts, and following the game all fans will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza. In addition, the Ducks will don pink jerseys and use pink bats during the game, which will be auctioned off for charity throughout the week.
