(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 27, 2008) – The Long Island Ducks snapped their five-game losing streak and defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday 4-1 before a sellout crowd of 6,119 at Citibank Park.
Randy Leek (10-2) kept the Maryland bats in check, allowing just one unearned run on six hits over six innings of work. Blue Crabs starter Ryan Bicondoa (11-6) suffered a rare loss, though it marked the second time this season he was defeated by the Ducks. The righthander allowed three runs on 12 hits over six and one-third innings, striking out four. Ben Grezlovski delivered two shutout innings in relief for Long Island, and Charlie Weatherby shut the door for his third save of the season.
The Ducks got on the board early. Juan Francia picked up an infield single and advanced to second base on a error. A wild pitch move the speedster to third before P.J. Rose chased him home with a base hit to left. In the third, the Ducks increased their lead on a two-run homer by designated hitter Kyle Nichols, the highlight in a 3-for-4 night for the slugger. Francia had three hits as well and two runs scored. Ray Navarrete picked up an RBI on a groundout in the eighth.
The Ducks wrap up their pivotal three-game series against the second-place Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the Citibank Park gates open at 6:05 p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive team posters, courtesy of Newsday. Lance Davis was the first when he won 11 games in 2005 and Pat Ahearne, Pat Mahomes and Pete Hartmann all accomplished this feat in 2006…In four games with the Ducks this season, Juan Francia has collected nine hits and scored four times.
