Doug Hughes to call all of the action beginning Tuesday

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will stream live webcasts of the final 16 home games of the inaugural season, beginning with Tuesday’s 7:05 game against the York Revolution at Regency Furniture Stadium.  Fans can listen to the live webcasts by visiting www.somdbluecrabs.com and clicking on the “Click Here to Listen” graphic on the top-right side of the page, or below the Today’s Game sections of the homepage.

Calling the games will be Doug Hughes, who has been broadcasting minor league baseball games since 2000.  Hughes has also covered collegiate and Major League baseball in Los Angeles, CA as a television reporter and anchor.

“This is a big, first step in using mass media to connect enthusiastic members of Crustacean Nation with the Blue Crabs on more regular basis.  We expect to build this out next year with many more games, including road game,” said Blue Crabs General Manager Mark Viniard.

Hughes has previously broadcast games for the Bowie Baysox and the Lancaster Barnstormers.  He also did public address announcing for the Baysox and Frederick Keys.  Hughes was a finalist for the public address position when the Washington Nationals moved into D.C.  The lawyer-turned-broadcaster was previously a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice.  While working for two television stations in the Los Angeles, CA market, covering the L.A. Dodgers and L.A./Anaheim Angels, Hughes interviewed many Major League ballplayers including Ken Griffey, Jr. and Alex Rodriguez.

The audio will be streamed by SportsJuice.com, one of the largest providers of sports webcasting services in the industry.  SportsJuice.com is the single largest source of professional, minor league and amateur sports broadcasts on the Internet, with over 40,000 scheduled games a year.

“I am excited to be a part of the Crustacean Nation family and look forward to bringing Blue Crabs baseball into the homes and offices of our fans,” said Hughes.  “I hope to have a lot of fun over the next month and trust that fans will enjoy the ability to listen to our games.”

Hughes, who lives in Arlington, VA with his wife and infant son, has also done community work; including emceeing various awards ceremonies and charitable fundraisers.

  1. Listening to the broadcast as we speak, and it rocks!

    Great job Blue Crabs!

  2. I LOVE THE LIVE BROADCAST! I was actually at the game tonight, but we had to leave early because the hubby has to get up really early to go to work in the morning. Since I don’t have to get up as early for work as he, it was so cool to come home and listen to the rest of the game — even though it was to hear about a one run loss, but it’s so good to listen to the commentary to learn more about the players, etc. Wish it was also broadcasted on the radio so we could listen at the games too, but one thing at a time. Thanks Blue Crabs! And thanks Crusthead #1 — this is a terrific site you have!

  3. BTW, I wanted to say that I enjoyed Doug’s play-by-play. He’s the right guy for the job.

There were some little glitches, as one might expect on the first night of the webcast, but all and all, Bravo! to the Blue Crabs!
