Sandel And Osborn Will Start For Liberty Division

The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs are proud to announce that six team members have been chosen to represent the organization in the 2008 Atlantic League All-Star game, to be held in Somerset, NJ.

Selected to serve as reserves for the Liberty Division squad were catcher Adam Shorsher, outfielder Curtis Pride, relief pitcher Matt Schweitzer, and starting pitcher Ryan Bicondoa. Starting the game after being selected by the online fan vote will be shortstop George Sandel and third baseman Patrick Osborn.

Patrick Osborn, a native of Bakersfield, California, is the league’s leading run producer. The third baseman has 69 RBI on the season, first in the league by a wide margin. Patrick also leads the team with ten home runs, nine of which were hit in the month of June.

George Sandel has played in all but one game for the Blue Crabs, averaging .265 from the plate. Leading off for Southern Maryland since day one, George has drawn a team-high 46 walks and compiled a .370 on-base percentage.

Despite spending some time on the disabled list, catcher Adam Shorsher has hit nine home runs on the season, good for second on the Blue Crabs roster. The native of Mountain View, CA has also driven in twenty-six runs on the year.

Curtis Pride was the Blue Crabs’ top hitter in the month of June, batting .330 to raise his overall mark to .282. Primarily serving as the designated hitter, Curtis is second on the team in runs batted in with 34, and is tied with teammate John Ramistella for third most runs scored in the league, having crossed the plate fifty times this season.

Ryan Bicondoa has anchored the league’s best pitching staff, posting a 7-4 record and 3.98 earned run average. Bicondoa has struck out 67 batters on the season, second best in the league, and is in the top five in four different categories.

Mathew Schweitzer is to the bullpen what Bicondoa has been to the starting rotation, having allowed only four earned runs in thirty-seven appearances. With an ERA of 1.03, Schweitzer has also posted three saves for the club, and has struck out forty-four batters while allowing only fourteen walks.

The all-star game will be held in Somerset, NJ on Wednesday, July 16th. The event will feature a home run derby in addition to the game, as well as special appearances by the ZOOperstars and Birdzerk, as well as various mascots from around the Atlantic League. Southern Maryland’s own Pinch will be making an appearance, along with other VIP guests.
